Thurisaz is the third rune of the Elder Futhark. After the beginning represented by Fehu and the physical strength of Uruz, it introduces the first true trial. This rune confronts you with resistance, friction and situations that demand clarity.

Thurisaz stands for raw power, chaos and protection. It is neither gentle nor subtle. It appears when a decision must be made. When avoidance no longer works and half measures are exposed.

The sound value of Thurisaz is TH. A harsh, grinding sound that does not flow but stops. It demands attention and presence. Nothing about this rune is comfortable.

Symbolically, Thurisaz is associated with thorns, thresholds and the Thursar, the giants of Norse mythology. They embody untamed natural force, chaos and the uncontrollable. Thurisaz does not bring this energy as a permanent state, but as a moment of confrontation.

Aggression can also become autonomous. Power is no longer used deliberately, but reflexively. Boundaries are drawn where endurance, patience or steadiness would be required.

The shadow side of Thurisaz reminds us that not every resistance must be overcome by breaking. Some trials do not demand separation, but perseverance. Only those who can distinguish between the two use the power of this rune consciously.
